A medication used to prevent pregnancy by inhibiting ovulation, altering cervical mucus, and modifying the uterine lining.
Indications:
- Contraception to prevent pregnancy.
- Management of symptoms associated with premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), including anxiety, depression, irritability, headache, breast tenderness, and weight changes.
Main Active Ingredients:
- Drospirenone 3 mg.
- Ethinyl Estradiol 0.03 mg.
Precautions:
- Do not use if pregnant or if you recently had a baby.
- Avoid if you have an adrenal gland disorder, kidney disease, uncontrolled hypertension, heart disease, coronary artery disease, circulation problems, or a history of stroke, heart attack, or blood clot.
- Contraindicated in patients with undiagnosed vaginal bleeding, severe migraine headaches, liver disease, liver cancer, or hormone-sensitive cancers such as breast or uterine cancer.
- Smoking while using this medicine, especially in women over 35 years, significantly increases the risk of blood clots, stroke, or heart attack.
- Risk of serious cardiovascular events is highest during the first year of use.
Side Effects:
- Nausea and vomiting.
- Breast tenderness.
- Headache, mood changes, irritability, or fatigue.
Weight gain.
- Changes in menstrual cycle or decreased libido.
- Rare but serious: blood clots, stroke, heart attack, jaundice, or allergic reactions.
Drug-Drug Interactions:
- Hepatitis C antiviral medications may reduce the effectiveness of Zarah and increase liver risks.
- Certain antibiotics and anticonvulsants can lower contraceptive efficacy.
- Drugs that affect potassium levels may increase the risk of hyperkalemia when combined with drospirenone.
- Always inform your doctor of all medications, supplements, or herbal products being used.
- Take one tablet daily at the same time each day, following the order in the pack.
- If you miss a pill, follow the patient instructions for catch-up dosing, as missed doses increase pregnancy risk.
- Use back-up contraception (such as condoms) for at least 7 days if two or more pills are missed.
