A medication used to treat superficial skin infections such as impetigo and infected lesions by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis and halting the growth of pathogenic bacteria.
Indications:
- Treatment of impetigo caused by Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes.
- Treatment of secondary infected traumatic skin lesions due to susceptible isolates.
Main Active Ingredient:
- Mupirocin (2% w/w).
Precautions:
- Avoid use if allergic to mupirocin or any component of the formulation.
- Use with caution in patients with large areas of damaged skin or burns, especially with compromised renal function due to potential for systemic absorption of polyethylene glycol in some formulations.
- Not established for use in infants under 2 months for ointment or 3 months for cream.
Side Effects:
- Burning.
- Stinging.
- Itching.
- Rash.
- Dryness.
- Tenderness.
- Swelling.
- Nausea.
- Contact Dermatitis.
- Exfoliative Dermatitis.
- Increased Skin Exudate.
- Allergic Reactions (Hives, Facial Swelling, Wheezing).
Drug–Drug Interactions:
- No significant systemic drug–drug interactions are expected because of negligible systemic absorption through intact skin.
