A medication used to improve urination in men with benign prostatic hyperplasia by relaxing smooth muscles in the prostate and bladder neck, thereby easing urinary flow.
Indications:
- Improves urinary flow and relieves symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), such as weak stream, frequent urination, and urgency.
Main Active Ingredient:
- Tamsulosin hydrochloride 0.4 mg.
Precautions:
- May cause dizziness or fainting, especially after standing (postural hypotension).
- Inform your eye surgeon if you are scheduled for cataract surgery due to the risk of intraoperative floppy iris syndrome.
- Use with caution in patients with severe liver or kidney impairment, or in those with prostate cancer.
Side Effects:
- Dizziness, abnormal ejaculation, nasal congestion, headache, back pain, or sleepiness.
- Rare but serious: fainting or prolonged painful erection (priapism).
Drug-Drug Interactions:
- Strong CYP3A4 inhibitors such as ketoconazole.
- Moderate CYP3A4 inhibitors such as erythromycin.
- CYP2D6 inhibitors such as paroxetine or terbinafine.
- Phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitors such as sildenafil.
- Other alpha-blockers are used for hypertension or prostate conditions.
